Hi folks,
I apologize if this has been asked before. I did search but didn't see anything. I'm trying to install a mini starter that I bought from Summit Racing. The old starter has 3 wires. One is obviously for the battery, one goes to a post marked S (switch?) and one to a post marked R (relay?). The mini starter only has the bettery terminal connection and one more lug. Do I hook both of these up? Is one unnecessary? Do I have to rewire everything to make this happen (this is how I ususally end up having to do things
As always, thanks for the input. Ya'll enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Assuming you're still running points, there's some trick you'll have to do to get the starter to give cranking voltage... for now, I recommend doing a search for mini starter wiring, I don't remember that info off the top of my head. (My 78 is HEI)
The S term is the START term and gets the purple wire.
The R term is for RUN which gets the yellow wire, this yellow wire feeds the coil during cranking.
On your mini starter the single term needs the purple wire to crank the engine.
The yellow is the one you have left over , don't put it on with the purple.
Some cars will start without the yellow because the dist is already being fed by the resistor wire.
If you need the yellow you will have to buy the diode kit from Summit so you can connect to the mini starter.
Here is the diode pigtail from Summit. You can make this pigtail using a 10amp diode from Radio Shack.
You connect one end of this pigtail to the yellow wire and the other end to the large lug on the starter that is not connected to the battery cable. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWM-600/
You could also just use an inexpensive relay. Ground to ground, energize to the "S" terminal/purple wire on the relay coil side. On the switch side, Common to a fusable link to the big starter post. Switched to the yellow wire.

Sounds complicated but really isn't and much less expensive than the Summit harness.
