Best Place to Get Spicer U joints?
I've read only good things about them, and i know some of you have cracked your Bruteforce. I'm wondering what the best place to get Spicer U joints is? I haven't really found anyone online in my google searches, maybe i'm missing something. Also, what is "greasable" vs. "nongreasable"?
Does anyone have the part number for halfshaft joints that will fit in an 80? Thanks!
Jen

I bought my Spicers from http://www.tomsdifferentials.com Also talk to http://www.speeddemonmotorsports.com my Taylor wires and plugs came from them. I'm not sure how much Chris does with C3s at Speeddemon.

The "greasable" have zerk fittings and are generally weaker because the U-joint is not solid. "Non-greasable" does not have the grease passages inside the joint and are solid, so they are stronger.

Also, The greasable u-joints have zerking fitting to lube the u-joint. The nongreasable do not. The nongreasable are stronger because they are not drilled to take the zerk fitting.

Jenny - Last time I checked Spicers were available in greaseable only; anyone else correct me if I'm wrong. When I was looking, NAPA carries them or can order them for you if that's what you want. For strength and high torque applications, nongreaseable (no zerk fitting in the middle) are preferred vs the greaseable (with zerk fitting in the middle which weakens the joint). I just finished putting Brute Force on mine which carry a one year unconditional warranty. I've not heard of anyone having the Brute Forces fail on them. Also, they are <$13 each at Autozone which is cheaper then Spicers which are close to double that! Just my .02

Spicer is owned by Dana corporation if I am not mistaken maybe take a look there and you can find out their distributors.
My dad used to work for Dana so I got them in the vette. no problems yet and they are greasables and are about 9 years old.

Do a search I posted about these last week. Found A driveshft shop that stocks them for $16 & change. If you can't find them I can get them but you'll have to give me dimensions first. They may be different from the early C3's?

Re: Best Place to Get Spicer U joints? (Stingy74)
I just installed these into my 1969 2 weeks.
The Spicer part number for the driveshaft was 5-625X.
The Spicer part number for the halfshafts was 5-627X.
Just like the part numbers Flareside has the pics of.
These are non-grease able joints.
In the midwest there is a company called Certified Power Train that carries them. They can get these for you in one day.
The number for the Des Moines location where I got mine is:
1-515-244-5599.
You may need to put a little bit more of a bevel on your half shaft flanges to get them to fit into it due to the larger center sections of the 5-627X's.
Any questions let me know.

Mark, if that 500 ft.lb. tree-stump puller of yours hasn't broken your U-joints, I guess we're all pretty safe??

GTR1999.
The only place that the spicers gave me a little problem was trying to get them to fit into the half shaft flanges that bolt to the trailing arm hubs.
If you look at the flanges they have a small bevel on them.
I just had to take a file and make just a little more of a bevel and they went right in.

Most any reputable driveshaft rebuild center will stock/sell Spicer ujoints.
I had my driveshaft shortened and the shop, Performance Shaft Technology in Clearwater, Fl actually substituted Spicer Jeep u-joints since the OEM ujoint for the shaft wasn't available. You can also try Van Steel since they rebuild the half-shafts.

The 1969....1970... + vintage halfshaft U-Joints have a different cup diameter than the 1980. They're not interchangeable, so the part number will be different. We did Chris N's off his 81 a few weeks ago, and compared them to a 70's vintage set... they are different. I also helped Mark with his 69.... larger diameter than the 1981. FYI
Tom
Edit.. I'm assuming the 80 & 81 are the same... I could be wrong on that. I didn't pay much attention when I had the 80's in my greasy hands yesterday. Sorry I failed to mention the greaseable vs non-greaseable issue.... my bad.

Re: Best Place to Get Spicer U joints? (James)
Thanks James, I ended up ptting them in a Bridgeport and just touching them with a 3/4" end mill to put a radius in there. Cross went right in without giving up any strength of the flange.
Thanks for the feedback,
Gary
