Default Engine and trans. removal

I am removing the engine and manual trans. from my 68 BB.

Do I just unhook the shifter linkage and the shifter and shifter bracket stay with the car?

Or does the shifter have to be removed also?

I have the AIM and it is not clear. I ordered a shop manual but it has not come in yet.

Thanks: Matt

Do I have to remove the shifter, is it mounted to the trans.?

To remove the shifter do I have to remove the console?

I did not want to do anything with the interior.

If I remember correctly, you need to remove the console shifter plate for access to some of the hardware. Then the linkage and shifter bracket can be removed from underneath.

Doing the little things, even though they may seem like more work, makes the remove and installation much easier and you have less chance to damage anything.

Ok, the console has to come out to get to the shifter cover plate, I can deal with that I have lots of time.

This may sound stupid, but I assume the shifter **** is threaded and screwed on the shifter?

I tried to unscrew it but it will not budge. Any ideas with out destroying the shifter ****?

Mine unscrews from the handle easily, but is tight enough to not spin while I'm shifting. Maybe try a strap wrench to get a better grip. This is with my stock shifter (assuming you have the same). An aftermarket (hurst) shifter might not be the same...

I read a similar post yesterday - Are you having the tranny serviced / changed? If not, it's apparently a lot less dis-assembly to pull out the engine and leave the tranny in place.

You cannot just leave a manual tranny sitting in there and pull the engine by itself. You need to pull the driveshaft, take out the shifter, unbolt the transmission mount and pull it back from the bellhousing. All that is left is to rotate it and pull it out of the hole. Might as well just take it out with the engine. The rear of the engine is supported by the transmission. Oh, and trying to undo those top two bolts on the tranny can be a real knuckle buster. I can't even imagine how much fun it would be going back together in pieces, under the car and up in the tunnel. Much easier to properly engage the throw out bearing and mount/torque the tranny to the bellhousing while everything is outside of the car. Just my opinion.
