You know those little pen-knives, corkscrews, and other supposedly dangerous items that you're not supposed to have in your carry-on luggage any more? Most airports will just confiscate these items and sometimes even store them for you. Michigan legislature passed a law (effective 4/1 believe it or not) whereby you may now be subject to ARREST, fine and/or jail! I flew out of Detroit this a.m. and the US-Air agent told me that he knew of about 20 people arrested on Monday. Make sure that you don't have anything questionable when you go through security, as you may find yourself taking an unplanned trip "downtown".
I disagree. Items such as corkscrews and nail clippers should certainly be confiscated. People with such items should even be scrutinized at a higher level by security. But to arrest and even incarcerate for possession of these items alone is rediculous. I'm sure if I was the same old lame security dude with my recent upgrade to the federal payroll and increased wage, in my zelousness, I could find something to jail most grammas carrying a purse!
20 people arrested? for possesion of what? a nail file? that is truly pathetic! Waste of criminal justice resources and think about the waste of time and money of those arrested. The whole idea of nail clippers and some of these other items being labeled "dangerous" is ridiculous. What about someone trained in martial arts? You know, the guy whose hands are registered with the police as lethal weapons? Does he have to get handcuffed before boarding a plane? A big strong guy can do much more damage on his own than a little old lady with a nail file. A guy could take off his cowboy boot and beat you to death with that (even with no explosives in it). How bout a steel toed boot? Does that guy get arrested? Just really really lame. Michigan...... a wholes... MJ
