Just checking to see from everyone's experience, does the hood need to come off to pull the motor out of a '69? I was planning on pulling the motor and tranny seperate. Just looking to see if I can save some heartache when it comes time to align everything agfterward, and I don't have a good place to store the hood after I take it off.
It looks like there would be plenty of clearance. I just don't want to be in the middle of lifting the motor and finding out the hood needs to come off.
I have pulled the intake and heads already, if that makes a difference.
I dont know if you have to pull the hood but i know that took off the hood and pulled the radiator before pulling my engine. I believe it is much easier this way. You can always just set the hood back on the car while the motor is out. thats what I ended up doing.
I'm pulling my motor this month, and honestly, there's no way I'd try to remove the engine without removing the hood, first. Even if it's possible, the overall lack of space would make it too hard to make up for the heartache saved by not removing the hood. :yesnod:
Guess I'm a wimp. I wouldn't even try pulling the motor from a 'Vette with the hood or radiator in there. I mean it's 4 bolts. I don't know ANYTHING about automatics but if your pulling a 4 speed, your going to change the clutch anyway, pull 'em together. I'd hate to risk hurting a 33 year old Muncie pilot shaft. Can you even buy them anymore?

Do yourself a favor, remove the hood. A corvette hood is easy to remove & install. Just scratch a line around the mount surface & pull the bolts with a friend holding the other side. I set my hood on the roof of the car with an old cushion under it. It stayed there for a year
Pulled my motor in my 72. Since I was redoing everything I removed the hood and pulled the radiator. Hood out of the way gives you more room to work. I needed a new core for the radiator and also replaced all the seals around it, Runs COOOOLLL now.
Also tried pulling and installing the engine and trans (350 w/4spd) as one unit, does work. You need to remove and install them separately. The assembly manual even states that. Believe me I tried. After fighting them both, took them apart and they slipped right in.
My 2Cs
Perhaps I should have mentioned that I frequently work on the 'Vette alone. It's a snap to remove the hood with an extra pair of hands but it's kind of awkward if you're by yourself.
Still, the engine will come out with the hood left on. Not a problem.
Thanks for all the input. I guess the old adage, better safe than sorry would apply here too. The Radiator is already out so I guess pulling the hood in order to pull the tranny & engine together makes sense.
With the hood off be careful about where you store it. I seem to remeember a post last year about a hood being caught by a gust of wind and flying through barbed wire, broken beer bottles, gravel, and into a new paint job.
