Default How do I mount the alternator with headers?

On my smallblock the lower mounting bracket for the alternator bolts into the left side exhaust manifold. When I do the BB swap I'm going to have headers and hence no place to mount an alternator bracket OEM style. I do want to use an OEM mounting location, how did you guys do it? I don't want to go custom if I can avoid it. I'm going to be using march V-belt pulleys.

Hey Steve, I've got a C4, but there is a similar dillemna. For the L98, John Lingenfelter said delete that bracket, its unneeded. However, I did have a problem with the AC and oil tube.

I lowered my Honda a while back, and since the coil over kit I bought was somewhat universal for Honda's, it came with many different sized spacers. Very big, thick spacers. So I used two that weren't the right ones for my Honda, drilled out the center, and got a longer bolt than the header bolt.(I was able to use a manifold bolt) Very solid, and it even looks good.

So, find a set of similar spacers(even pipe would work), and cut it about an inch long, and voila, its easy.

On my '70 SB, there was an adaptor that bolted to the #1 cylinder header bolts for the alternator. I am not sure about the big block though.

I am using the stock braket on my BB with headers I just did the following. 1)insert bolt throught hole of braket and use a nut between the braket and header, keep on backing off the nut as you tighten the bolt into the head once the head of the bolt is snug on the braket, then tighten the bolt towards the header this will tighten the header to head and you are done.

Do you have pictures of this? I'm having a hard time visualizing it. The bracket must be different than a small block bracket.

Steve, The BB bracket is different. Heck, Im using my 427 altenator brackets on my 502, with headers, and there is no modification issues. It goes right on

The 502 has the same external dimensions, and acces. mounting points, as the 427/454, except for the cluth ball boss (there isnt one).

Check with the catalogs or your local speed shop. I put headders on my ZZ4 after removing the stock exhaust manifolds and there is a bracket setup you can buy to mount the alternator and also the A/C compressor. Mr. Gasket makes a chrome one that I got at Pep Boys. I am runing a small block but I am sure that someone makes this setup for a big block.

Cool, that sums it up. I guess I'll be making another Zip order.
