Default preventive maintenance

I've removed the inside door panels from my 1980 c3 to replace the door carpeting and am
wondering if there is any preventive maintenance I should be doing while I'm in there? Also, I
removed the vinyl trim around the windshield and discovered alot of surface and flaking rust.
I should have looked in there before I put the new carpeting in.

Doors - If I felt up to it, I'd try to lube all of the moving pieces that I could and make sure that the vapor barrier (if there is one on an '80) is intact.

Pillars - I don't think surface rust is bad. "Flaking rust" could be depending on how bad. You can't poke a punch or screwdriver through any sections of the pillar, can you? You may want to soak the top of the windshield and the front of the T-tops with a hose (or take it through a power wash) and see if you have water coming in. Better to stop it now than wait for those pillars to rot through :yesnod:
