My 4-speed 69 will try to start while still in gear so the car will lurch forward. How can I trouble shoot this problem without just blindly replacing expensive parts? Thank You
Yes, with my foot off the clutch petal and with the trans still in gear if I turn the key the car will lurch forward. The neutral safety switch is suppose to prevent this but does not.
4 speeds have a safety switch on the clutch , clutch must be pushed in to start engine(no switch that senses neutral)
Automatics have a neutral switch that only allows starting in neutral and park.

OK, my 4-speed safety switch is not working. Can I test this switch before I try to replace it?
Did it just start doing this or has it been like this when you got it?
From the "crank" position on the ignition, a wire runs through a switch on the clutch pedal then to the starter. Check under the dash.
Guessing someone bypassed it.
Its also possible the small rod that goes from the pedal to the switch has fallen off.
To test the switch just check for continuity through the switch.

Sorry , looks like I was being a smartazz but some have misunderstood in the past thinking the 4 speed car should be able to start in "neutral" with clutch out.
There should be continuity through the switch with the pedal pushed in and no continuity with the pedal out.
good luck changing this switch! unless your arms are very short and can bend three directions at once and you can see in total darkness, this switch can't(imo) be changed. learn to depress the clutch, or unplug the wire lead and install a momentary contact switch under the dash. if you do the latter, it might prevent someone from taking the car for a "joyride".
Nope, you got it right. My 68 has no safety switch, only came on the auto in 68. I always remember, but I put a post it note on the dash when I dropped it off for alignment.

Humm, I do see two wires under the drivers side dash near the fuse panel with a wire cap on them. Perhaps these are them and someone did previously bypass. The car has been like this since I bought it in 1996. I will try to trace these wires. Thanks
