I am trying to put a new lens over the gauges in a 1981. I have the gauge cluster and console "plate" separted but can not get the gauges out of the dash. I think the radio, 8 track, has one little washer like nut left over the right side radio *** stem. I can not get it to move, if I am seeing what I think I am. I am about ready to drive it but have this and a shifter needle and a few minors things yet to do. I'm stuck with the gauge cluster removal. And those little nut like depressions in front of each gauge are just for looks right?
I'm new to the forum, I looked through the old posts and did not find this question.
I just traded (this winter)a '72 I restored, it still needed paint and smoked some for the "81. This is smoke free, has great paint runs good. I want to driveit!!
Remove the radio before attempting to remove the gauge cluster. The radio should have a bracket at the rear that mounts to a point on the transmission hump, to support radio and prevent it from vibration, so you must remove the bolt that holds the bracket to the radio.
Be careful with the plastic gauge cluster, they are hard, if not impossible to find and you really don't want to break this piece.
Assume you've already removed the console side pieces and the shifter plate.
There are also a couple screws that hold the gauge cluster to the shifter plate. Also be careful unpluging the wiring harness. That circuit board is only $175. to replace.
