While chasine an oil leak, I had my front cover off and noticed some wear on my nylon cam button. The semi-pointed nose was worn down, probably about .010" to .020" in 4k miles. I have replaced it with a roller button that I had to grind over .1" to get the correct endplay.
I originally bought a roller button, but did not think about grinding it down, so I ended up using the nylon one. I had read bad stuff about the aluminum (non-roller) buttons, but heard the nylon ones were good.
I just figured I'd pass this info on and highly suggest staying away from the nylon cam buttons.
Chris it's been a few years back but I built an Autocraft "horizontaly opposed and essentailly a hi-end aircooled VW" Race engine for a guy to use as a Turbo Charged Sand Dragster. With the parts ordered came nylon wristpin keepers.I was thinking man-o man! They hung in there but did take a beating and was changed every time it was reringed and bearings changed which was 15 passes. They brought new meaning to floating wrist pins! :)
I use the cam buttons that have the bearings in them although not all timing covers allow this use
