Default Removing old heater core

I have taken the blower box off from the engine bay side, and now can see the heater core. However, it won't budge. I didn't try to hard, because I wanted to get some tips first. So, are there any tricks I should know about; special ways to get the core out. I appreciate the advice, and my wife will appreciate it a lot more when there is heat blowing on her feet.

Thanks in advance.

You must remove 3 bolts 2 can be removed from inside the Cab and one can only be acesed from the engine bay. Also make sure you remove the heater hoses at the heater core.

You have to access the heater core through the cabin. I just replaced mine and this was the only way.

I had my complete interior out putting sound deadner in it and the dash was out as well. You don't have to pull the dash, but if you don't want to bang your head on everything trying to remove this, then it might be better. You do have to pull the center console gauge cluster, so what more is 6 more bolts and the speedo/tach cluster. To pull the dash it would require you to also drop the steering wheel down.

Thanks for the reply's...I think. You have all confirmed what I was afraid of; that the dash must come. It won't be too bad because most of the dash is still out from replacing the tach. Thanks for the advice.

Good luck on this project!

We did it on a 78 last year and it took us from 11 am to 2 am - we even had to re-solder the new core because it was crap and didn´t fit - ORIGINAL DELCO CORE!!!!! Shame! :cuss :cuss :cuss :mad :mad :mad

 I believe that's only the case if you are running AC. Without air, the core can come out through the engine bay. There are only plastic clips holding the core in the heater box, so all you need to do is remove the blower/cover assembly which can be done from the engine side. I think someone here on the forum had a web page with pictures showing the entire operation(Juliet maybe? - think it was a blue shark).
If any early C3 guys know differently, please chime in. I've got the core sitting on my bench waiting for the next warm Saturday.

Here are some pics for you. Removal from the firewall side. Unfortunately I cannot get them in the right order so you will have to browse.

If you don't have A/C it can be taken out through the engine compartment. There was a guy who had pictures of the entire process but when I searched the archives and found the link it was no longer active. Maybe someone has the picture to share with you. Do a search here on the forum and type in Heater Core and search the archived posts. You'll find a lot of posts on this subject.

That was me. But with the demise of PhotoPoint I lost the album and all the captions. The raw pics are here in the Forum at the site noted above but I cannot figure out how to get them in order. And of course captioning is not available. If anyone has a question on one or more of the pics, cite it by number(s) and I will let you know why I took them.

Ken--In my humble opinion, I don't think it is necessary to remove dash, possiblily cracking dash. The core will come out, more often than not with some tender lovin care. Remember it has been in place 30 + years. First make sure all bolts are out--as I recall one had to be gained through engine compartment side. Also possible black goop--it does come out Ken. :yesnod:

Apparently you cannot view the album so here are several pics of how it comes out. I have heard from someone via instant message. There is a snap-on clip shown in one photo that holds it in.

Here is the empty box with the lovely green coolant that ruins your carpets.

Here is the clip that holds the heater core in to your left.

And here is the finished product. That job was two summers ago. No problems since. The job took about one hour. Sorry for all the edits: I post my pics one-by-one. There must be a better way.....

Hey Paul,
Do you recall if you had to remove the expansion tank or the washer resevoir to get the blower motor cover off?

No, there is a lot of room to move in there (without A/C). The job is very simple. You can see the blower cover relative to the expansion tank in this photo. Not an annoyance at all.

Mine is a 1980 with AC. My heater tubes went down through the firewall underneath the car instead of out the side. Due to space, it would have not come out through the engine compartment. This is also the way the GM Service Manual told me was the best and only way.

So I guess it would be different with A/C non/AC cars.

WHen I removed mine on a '71 with A/C, I only removed the front panel on the dash on the passenger side. THe rest was pretty straight forward. You just have to take your time and make sure you find all the bolts holding it in. SOme are covered with a tar or caulk like goop. It took me about 8 hours working on it at my father's car repair shop.

paul79,
Thanks for the pictures. I do not have AC, so my job should be easy. I got the blower box off easily. There was plenty of room after I took the wiper door actuator off. The only thing I'm not clear on is where the clip is. The Haynes manual says nothing about it, and I haven't seen it in the AIM. I will look for it again. Is the clip on the left side of the core looking from the engine side?

Again, thanks to everyone for their responses; I really didn't want to take apart the dash more than it already is.

Ken

Thanks for the pictures. I am going to keep them for future reference. I never thought I would say this, but I'm glad my car does not have AC.

Dang double dawg, look at all that room! I did mine with A/C, and it came out the inside. After my compressor is in, I won't be able to see the rh side...
