After my wife and I have driven our 82, we notice a couple things we'ew not sure about.
When throttle is applied, there is a slight hesitation often. Also, the overdrive is kicking in and out when cruising at light throttle. I know the overdrive is supposed to kick in at 25 Mph, which seems to low. Is this normal? And if so, can the overdrive be set up to kick in closer to highway sppeds?
Thanks for your help.
Re: 82 Engine and Transmission Questions (corvgreg)
The early 700R4's (your transmission) are calibrated to shift into O.D. very early AND the torque converter locks up very early. That makes for poor drivability and is hard on the entire drive train. Most Corvette houses like Eckler's sell reprogramed PROMS to fix that. Also it is NEVER advisable to use O.D. at low speeds (under 60mph.) This causes lots of stress on the 3-4 clutches and they burn out. (common 700R4 failure) The more power you have available the worse this is. You will get a lot more enjoyment from you 82 with the new prom... Well worth the money.
Re: 82 Engine and Transmission Questions (corvgreg)
Silverman is correct. I have an 82 that was just about undrivable with the stock chip in the computer. The trans would go into overdrive and the converter would lock up and damn near stall the engine. I put in a Hypertech Thermo-Master chip and a 160 degree thermostat and the car had 100000% better drivablity. Before you buy this from any of the Corvette supply places, check with Summit Racing http://www.SummitRacing.com for their pricing. They were $30 cheaper for the EXACT same part back when I bought mine!!
Re: 82 Engine and Transmission Questions (Twinnie)
I haven't ordered yet. I'll wait to hear from you to confirm and what you'd want for it. Summit Quoted about $104. There is a different part number for California vs. Federal, but I'm not sure what difference there would be between them.
Re: 82 Engine and Transmission Questions (corvgreg)
Greg,
A new prom chip is a good move, but silvervetteman made a GOOD point. If you keep it in 3rd for your normal stoplight-to-stoplight driving, the 700R4 is fine. I've learned, after 15 years of driving mine, to knock it into D (overdrive) only at highway speeds. If you keep it in D for daily driving the shift points from 3rd to OD can be brutal (and unexpected). You can shift that tranny just like a manual and it performs fine. You'll get used to it.
Re: 82 Engine and Transmission Questions (corvgreg)
For the other part of your question about the hesitation, you may want to check timing, throttle body balancing, and throttle position sensor setting. Info on this can be obtained from the crossfire injection vault. I'll post the address just as soon as I find it.

Thanks again for the help...I'll look into these things. It's a new learning curve for me, as most of my experience is from the complete restoration and 383 engine build that I did on a 71 T-Top.
