aloha..while i was re-doing and checking out the cooling system last week i noticed that the water neck or thermostat cover was very badly coroded..i think the pieces are disinigrating into the system so i would like to replace it..i have a used chrome one at home that i would like to replace it with..now the chrome one has a rubber gasket built into it..do i still need to find a gasket or some type of sealer along with the rubber gasket or is this all that is needed for a proper seal ??
also the original waterneck has an extra hole on top that is bolted shut,im assuming that this was for the heater which i dont have hooked up here in hawaii and the chrome one doesnt..will this mater later on down the line when i re-hook the a/c unit up..what i am asking is whether or not the heater needs be hooked up for the a/c unit to be working?
I had one like that with the rubber gasket. I still put permatex on the thing just in case.
My suggestion is to not bother looking for that o-ring. Clean things up real nice, put a small bead of permatex in the o-ring groove. Install the water neck just past finger tight, give it an hour or two to set up, then torque it down. I used to go through the whole process of getting the paper gasket and coating it with #2 permatex and now I think that was a big waste.

razz, there should be two holes on an original '80 thermostat housing. Both were for two TVS(thermal vacuum switches), one when the car was warmed up opened the EFE(Early Fuel Evaporation)Heat Riser, the other TVS opened the EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation)Valve.
