Default Attemped Break-In

Had a bit of a scare yesterday afternoon.
About 5pm (est) ''someone'' tried to get into my Vette while it was parked in the employee parking lot at work.
I didn't find out about it till 5:30 when I was leaving.
I was clocking out and another employee came up to me and asked if the ''gray'' vette was mine....I said yea...then went on to explain to me that one of the truck drivers saw some ''kids'' hanging around my Vette and one actually tried to get the drivers door open...and was pulling hard enough that the car was rocking..The truck driver decided to go over and when the ''kids'' saw him they (2 of them) jumped in their car and sped off!!
As luck would have it....they never did get inot the Vette..but I decided to call the police and make a report about it....and get this...while I was sitting in my car talking on the cellphone to the dispatcher at the PD....the same kids actually have the kahoonas to come back!!!
When they saw me sitting in the car they took off..but I did get a partial plate number and 2-3 minutes later a sherriffs car pulls up and about 3 minutes after 2 town cops as well.
What is the world coming to when in broad daylight in a Wal*Mart parking lot someone tries to steal your car!? |sad|
I definitely am NOT parking in the same lot today (supposely designated employee parking with security)..gonna leave it in a HIGHer profile area!!

You didn't think the kids would come back, did you? Thats why they do it.

I work at a very large plant and two kids tried to steal a security guards truck while it was outside the security shack. They got in and got the truck started by the time someone came out and ran them off........ they called the police but before they got there the kids were backtrying for the truck again.....

In the end three vehicles were destroyed as well as severe damage to two cruisers, one officer injured and 2 15 year olds in jail. They'll be out of juvy in a couple of years to do it again.

I'm glad they didn't damage the vette, that would suck

Lemme tell ya..I was SHOCKED  ..I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw their car...was exactly the same car the truck driver told me about!!!!!

Me too, after all the work we have put into it the last year.
..Hubby seems to think that maybe they were going after the new CD player ..probably..I dunno....there was nothing else in the car.

Glad they didn't get it. Be very careful Rose, I assume they know you saw them. That could either scare them off for good, or actually draw them back. Be on the lookout, we don't want anything happening to you!

Thanks for the concern Dave...I think parking in a different area will probably deter them from trying anything again.....and the fact that I did the ''right'' thing and called the police....still am little ''leery'' about going to work today...but...think that is just the after effects....got the ''was it me?...what it the car?...was it just where it was parked?? etc etc etc''.....questions going through my head.
At least the cops will be on the lookout for these ''kids''.

Just a thought, you could shoot them if they come back. :) With a camera I mean. If you were to carry a small pocket camera you would have something hard to go on should these *^&%^s come back.

If there's one thing in the world I despise the most, its punks like that. :boxing

Just the fact that they were 'pulling on the locked door' to get it open shows what kind of monkey brains they have. I bet they often push on the doors that say 'pull'.

I'm seriously considering that tear gas alarm gimmick I read about here a while back. The guy had it hooked into his clutch pedal and a toggle switch. Although he accidentally set it off, I don't care about something going wrong and gassing myself... at least it'll stop the a-holes who are trying to get into the car. But I'd hook it into the ignition switch, door switch, and cabin motion detector. (and maybe a pressure switch behind the radio if I get one :) ).
I'm good with electronics, so I'll hook it into a keychain remote system. Hell, maybe I'll start selling them! :)

Anyways, glad to hear the car is alright.

:) ..the tires/rims are Neet ain't they??
the tires are Michelins..Front is 275/40/ZR17....the back are 315/35/ZR17.
The wheels are American Racing TT2s...9inch on the front and 11inch on the back...got some wicked backspacing to get the depth on the rears!! :D

I would like to thank everyone for their concern and replys...make me feel abit better ''talking'' about it..

BTW...I got an update from security at work today..the police came back and wanted to view the serveillance tape...got their car on tape but NOT when they were at MY car...it was out of range of the camera.

Wow. i havent yet got up the ba;;z to park the vette anywhere where local kids hang out in mass quantities. i only park where i can see her, or in a VERY obvious place, say facing traffic. no ones ever tried to screw with it yet, but i have a little trick. i am known around school for havin a 4k stereo system in my truck. in about 3 months, i had 5 attempted breakins. so heres what i did. i waited until it happened again. immediatley tried to figure out what they were doing to try to get in. i found small scratches on the clear coat on the door jamb. so, since i had two metal plates in the door, one striker and one id tag, i hooked up my stereo to a store bought cheap alarm. first time you bump it or disturb it, it chirps. second time you disturb it, a horn goes off for about 5 seconds. it also turns on my 700 watt amp, and charges the capacitor in the stereo system. the third time it makes no sound. just has those afformentioned steel plates electrified with 700 watts and shocks the F*CK out of anyone stupid enough to try a metal coat hanger or somethin else to catch the lock cable. just a quick jolt, not nearly as much as on a stun gun, but enough to knock you down, scar the poopie out of you, and send a slight tingle through your whole body. im me and ill send you plans

Ganey gave me a link to i site that sells stainless steel collars for the steering colmn. I had to delete my hard drive so I don't have it. Mabye he'll chime in and give us the link. It looked very stong. Not at all like smashing pot metal. I was interested in buying one. Getting off the subject you say your good at ELEC. stuff i'm not. My tach didn't work at all when I first bought my 79. Then it just came on, but messed up. It was idling at 3500 and pegging the tach. if you just tapped the gas. Now it's frozen at 3500. Some have told me the circuit board is probably the problem. I have a working tach from my totaled 78. I would just rather get this one working too iff possible. Any suggestions? Also my light only work on high beam. Before I dig into the steering column are there other things to check? Sorry about the long post. :conehead

marcfouchi-
I'm the one who gassed myself... and it was a stupid mistake in "engineering" that caused it- I had the primary alarm mounted upside down on velcro in the jack compartment. It fell off and shorted on the jack. Totally my fault- totally Bubba. When the UnGo box is "tampered" with, the default circuitry sets off the alarm, and disables the keypad. A "short" constitutes "tampering" as far as the box is concerned... it worked flawlessly.

The system was simple- the primary alarm (UnGo Box, with siren etc) detected intrusion/movement. It fed a +12v signal to a secondary box which was a pager (Page Alert). It also had a +12V "driver" output (as opposed to a "signal" 12V) which fed the tear gas cannister. The tear gas cannister was a 12V fired unit (as opposed to a trip wire unit) that I purchased from a company called "Mountains West" (I think). Since I didn't want to accidentally gas myself (or my wife), the -12V for the cannister was only available if/when the clutch was depressed. I custom fabricated the bracket/switch for this.... first out of soft copper for malleability in the design stage, then out of steel for durability (it's still on the car). The theory was, if I accidentally set off the alarm, the tear gas would not automatically fire. Only someone stealing the car would be stepping on the clutch if the alarm was going off. The cannister was also mounted with a fabricated quick disconnect so I could remove it under "normal" conditions... which was most of the time. I even had a small plaque made to slip on the dash when the system was armed- it says: "WARNING! ARMED WITH TEAR GAS". I also had the gel-pack battery backup as sold by the UnGo company in case they killed the battery to disarm the alarm, and hot-wired & push started the car. This is a possibility with a non-computerized ignition 4 speed (1970).

The weak link in the system was the velcro. Who woulda guessed.

The whole adventure was the result of my 1971 LS5 being stolen & never seen again.
Location- an AT&T parking lot in Franklin Township (115 Belmont) in New Jersey, 2 rows from the guard office, in plain view, between 10:15 and 12:00 noon. We all believe it was an "inside" job because one of the shipping clerks had paid me a visit a few days before the theft, and I told him that I was in the process of fixing the factory alarm. Several other Vettes had been stolen from the same lot in the previous 4 months.. so many, that they had installed surveilance cameras on an adjacent building. But... nobody warned me.

If you want to keep these cars, just don't let them out of your sight.
Or at least install a simple hidden "kill switch".

Tom

I learned long ago to never park in a department store or a train station parking lot. The thives know your gong and can't see your car so it's easy pickin's for them. Some of them hang around train stations and wait till the train leaves the station then go through the lot looking for the model of their choice.
