whats the best way to check for previous owners mods done to an engine?
Car i've got is a 69 with a 1978 305 in her. Prob only 145hp although seems like alot more.
Heads are original, air intake changer to a edelbrock performer and oil pan changed.
Car seems too zippy for the engine to be completely stock. Driven a good few mid seventies vettes and they all seemed way less powerful.

I can't think of a non-invasive way of checking the pistons or compression. Perhaps a compression test would give you some indication but not much more.
One thing you could do is degree your cam. This would give you an idea if it is stock or not.

I believe the stock 78 305 could have anywhere from 220HP to up around 350HP....
That helps a lot right?.....

Curious to know what 1978 305 engine made 350 HP stock. The optional Vette L82 350 was 220 HP.

I've seem to have found out that as stock i'm looking at 145 - 155 Hp. Does seem like a fair bit more though.
Suppose a 0 - 60 might indicate something

Yep. Why guess? The dyno will tell you what's coming to the wheels and a good dyno tuner will be able to make it run better yet.
