Default 1976 Crate Engine Purchase

Looking for any good references on purchasing a turnkey crate engine for 1976 C3 corvette. The engine in the car is not the original, so rather than rebuild I would like to purchase a crate engine. Not looking for large horsepower just a good engine replacement.

I love my GM 355 HP ZZ4. A GM 260 HP Universal 350 or a 330 HP 350 HO would be good choices too. It all depends on how much $ you want to spend and how much seat of the pants acceleration you want.

I had purchased the GM crate engine 12499529 350/290 for my 1976 4 speed. I wanted to use the original L-82 valve covers and ram horn exhaust. Haven't fired it yet but hope to by spring to get a feel for this engine.

I understand it has the L-82 / L46 cam. Some articles state this is a questionable combination. I trust GM and purchased the motor with warranty.

Very happy with my ZZ4 in my 1981 also. Sure is nice to have enough power to beat a Yugo. Stock 190 HP, what was Chevrolet thinking?

I have a GM 350 HO that is performing above GM's specs and I really like it. It will get you into the 13's with street tires. HOWEVER, the LT4 kit and Comp Cams beehive springs is high on my priority list.

I put the 260 hp Crate in my 80 and it was like crazy fast.. Stock was 185hp.. Big increase in HP for me.. I was happy.. I paid $1500 at the local Chevy Dealer with a 3 year 100k warranty. A few bucks more, you can do the 290 hp but I was happy with the REGULAR FUEL 260 HP..

I plan on ordering the base ZZ350 from Pace. I can't see how this could be a bad deal.
