I went to start my Vette ('70 350/350) this afternoon and the first 2 times she wouldn't "catch"...turned over but didn't stay started. No big deal, it's 32 degrees, cold and I haven't started her in about a week so I figured as much that it would take a couple of cranks to get her going. The third time I went to turn the key...nothing. No lights, "clilck", fan, zero, zip, nada. So, she was turning over and then all the sudden, nothing. I checked the battery connection and that is okay. Where should I start to look at next...alternator, starter, etc.? I'm new to this "car thing" so be gentle!
Re: Car "stopped" turning over - HELP (Motor City Vette)
if you have proper voltage at your battery terminals but no electrical loads work, check your ground where it attaches to the frame, also check the ground from the frame to the block. a dirty or poorly connected ground can cause this.
Re: Car "stopped" turning over - HELP (Motor City Vette)
Take a look at the fusable link on the firewall near the heater box. Is it burnt? Also the connection between the fuse block halfs have been know to corrode and cause a complete power loss. :chevy
Re: Car "stopped" turning over - HELP (HWY 9 - '69)
Sounds like a bad connection in the starter wiring harness. Just for giggles, wiggle it a little with the ignition on and see if the interior lights come on. The plug is located at the top of you firewall by the distributor. Good luck.
I was hoping to go out and take a look at some of things you guys have suggested, but it's starting to snow like hell. Ahhh, isn't spring wonderful :p:

Sorry, I just couldn't pass this one up,
Title : "Car "stopped" turning over - HELP" - sounds like you needed traction control ! :jester
Yeah, check those terminals (both sides) - sounds like you have a 'loose' connection.....and the terminals might be corroded at the wires (had to redo the ones on my car just recently)
:)

Yeah, I had to stop sweeping and washing the garage floor, cause I was starting to sweat so much. At least it was cooler today than yesterday, only 77 today, whew. :D :D :D
Re: Car "stopped" turning over - HELP (Motor City Vette)
I have to agree with HWY 9 - '69. This has happened to me before. There is a ground strap that runs from the bottom of your battery compartment to the frame. Since this strap is exposed to the elements, it often corrodes. Then eventually (never gives a warning sign), the car will do exactly as you said. It will have power until you try to turn it over. A starter pulls a lot of juice. When that strap corrodes, the current cannot move through as fast as shuts everything down. I would first check that strap. Good Luck.
