I have a 383 (4.030" bore) in progress with 5cc KB hypers. Top ring end gap should be 0.026" as per instructions.
Now, should I also follow the instructions for the second ring gap? It states 0.004" per inch of bore, which would make end gap for the second rings 0.016". Common practice seems to be a larger second ring end gap to reduce top ring flutter or lifting.
So... What do you guys thinks I should set the second ring gap at?
I asked my machine shop and UEM, but looking for opinions Both haven't responed yet, by the way (one week)
After reading some of the horror stories and pics with hypers gone bad I would do exactly as the manufacturer says.
From what I have read and seen on the forum, wrong gaps on hypers can give major breakdowns.
I would go for manufacturers specs. If in doubt, call or email them to be sure.
Follow the instructions that came with the KB's. The top ring gap on their pistons has to be bigger because of the design of the piston.
Good Luck.
Had the correct gap on KB's flat tops --did not check second gap but two broke out top ring gap both breaks looked identical-same place same size break--
Replace all with forged pistons and scat rods--hope this headache is over--Good luck Worship79 for sure--

Reason: errors
I believe their web site states the top ring gap should be 40% larger then the manufactures recommendations. There is also a program that will determine the ring gap for you....Tim
