My '73 was sold new in the LA area and spent most of its life there. Etched in the back glass is the name of a company called Truco Security Etch, followed by what I assume is an ID number for my car, followed by a toll-free number. When I called that number, I got the tone typically associated with a fax number. I know this is a long shot, but have any of you folks in SoCal - or anywhere else, for that matter - ever heard of Truco Security Etch? If so, do you have any info about how to contact them?
I do not specifically recall the company you mention, but there was a time before Lojack when the dealers would etch in numbers into the glass as a theft deterrent and charge big bucks for it. Something like undercoating a Vette for $500 so it would not rust. Now they sell Lojack and other add-on alarms.
I did a Google search on “Truco Security” and one company came up which might have had ties to the firm.
Guess if you find the files you can find the first owner?
Thanks a million for taking the time to respond and for doing the google search. The dealer angle is an interesting thought. I would have never considered that would be something a dealer might sell. Your surmise about finding the first owner is, of course, right on the money. I did recover the tank sticker from my car, or at least 75% of it. Unfortunately, the part that's missing had the name of the dealer to which the car was originally delivered.
