hoiw do you get the steering value apart from the relay rod?

I have a 79 and i assume you mean take the control valve off of the steering rod.. take the one bolt off the steering control valve and the control valve will unscrew from the rod. you can spread it a little with a chisel and it will unscrew a little bit easier. Just did it last wednesday.

Totally remove the bolt shown on the right side of this pic.. Gently wedge a screwdriver between ears of valve at this bolt location and unscrew valve like a nut from a bolt. Take notice of how far the valve is threaded onto rod. Counting the number of turns works well. Shaft of bolt prevents unthreading and orients valve position on rod. Rod has a flat area that bolt shaft must line up with. mike...
