I have a few general questions about Roll Cages. I understand the "point" system, so how many is appropriate for street use (assuming I use the swing out side bars)? Also, do rollcages protect in frontal and side impact collisions, or is it strictly as the name implies? (If anyone has had experience w/ rollcages, I'd love to hear it!) I hate to pester, but does anyone know the amount of work that goes into installing one (or a shop that could do it for me?) Thanks for your help!
If it's just for street use as you indicated, then a 4pt should be adequate. I rollbar is designed to protect you in the event of a rollover. Additional pts will increase the rigidity of your cars chassis.
The amount of work involved: that depends on the number of points your going to have (more points=more work). You'll need to remove the interior (seats, carpet, interior panel, etc.). You'll also need to cut holes into the floor to have access to the top of the frame where the bars will be attaching, then filling the holes again afterwards.
I can't suggest a place for you to take your car to, but I can suggest Jegs if you have an experienced welded that can build the rollbar & install it for you. If you dpo go thru with one, feel free to e-mail me and I'll give you some tips to look out for. Once you have the main 4pt hoop installed, it's not as big a deal later to add on to it ;) .
