The small block hood on my 72 is not going to work with the edelbrock performer intake and 2" air cleaner I have chosen to use. Wondering what kind of extra hood clearance an aftermarket L88 hood gives that doesn't utilize the cold air intake. By using a level across the sides of the fenders, I come up with about 1-1/4" clearance between the hood and the carb (give or take based on hood curvature). Obviously my 2" air cleaner won't work, wondering if anyone can give help me with the clearance that an L88 hood provides.
With an L88 hood you will have plenty of room.
If you change air filters you have plenty of room with the hood that you have now.
A friend of mine has a 71 Vette with a Professional Products Crosswinds intake on it, which is a rip off of the Performer RPM Air Gap intake.
That intake is taller than the Performer, and with a 2" drop base air filter his original small block hood closes.
just remember that L88 hoods are for BB Chevys that are longer and offset slightly to the right in the location of the air cleaner compared to a SB engine so make sure its modified to fit
Sounds like all you need is a good low profile drop base for your air filter assembly. I think I have seen a few members running the air gap and 3 inch filters on a SB with stock hood.
Do a search and you should find what parts folks are using.
