Default sold the 383:(

well, ive only had it for 2 months, and only running for about 3 weeks, but i sold it :cry i was talking to a local member of our cars club and he didnt believe my power figures on the new 383 block i got. so i took him out and showed him. he offered me 9k outright for the engine so he could drop it into his 68 camaro ss. im gonna miss the power, gotta drop down to a 250 hp engine now. at least my rear end will now last forever. i built it for 7k, so i figured a 2k paycheck would cover my labor, since most of the work was bolt ons. hmmm maybe theres a market for monster 383's? in any case i got the old engine put back in, along with some minor mods to give me 20 more hp. did this on fri with some help from some locals. took her out for a spin, and really, really realized how much im goin to miss the power. oh well, 2k is in the bank, should probably start saving for somethin a little less of a beast, like a zz4 or somethin. the 383 was a blast to drive, but a little wild for a daily driver. ill sure miss her. :blueangel: well about what im gonna replace it with, any comments?

What was in the 383?? I'm planning on building a 383, but I don't need it to be a daily driver, I need it too kick butt and take names.

Default Re: sold the 383:( (Aaron-74)

well lets see.. i got a list here.... ill list the mods along with the engine
ht383 gm engine around 4k
comp cams high duration cam
keith black pistons..bumped compression up 1/2 point
ported and polished heads.. my own labor no cost to me
rubber shim gasket added another 1/2 point to compression
miloden oil pump system
hei ignition system longer spark
torkman headers
underdrive pulleys
dual electric fans and a be cool radiator
speed demon 750 cfm vacuum secondaries 4 bbl
edelbrock intake manifold
cold air ram induction system. custom made by local machine shop
pro magnum roller rockers
(just for show) "corvette" small block covers from yourcovers.com
redtop battery from optima
add all that together and with some expert tweaking on the settings you should get around 600 lb ft and 540 hp. thats what i had
:(
good luck with that. it took some work to get it to hook up with the ground, ie better tires and a reinforced 4 speed, new centerforce clutch, rear end from tom's differentials. it was truly a viper eater. race the local viper and ate it alive. beat it on the local strip (aka yonkee street  ) by more that a car length

WOW! That was one bad butt stroker motor. You were VERY lucky to find someone willing to pay you 9 large for it. With all that excess cash you should at least consider purchasing a new ZZ4.

POST THE DYNO PRINTOUT. We've just gotta see those wicked power curves.

Wow must be hard to get back into your vette after that engine. $9k damn makes my slighlty modded 350 for $600 seem downright cheap, I guess I'll just have to talk to it to boost it's esteem.

hehe yah i got that dyno chart around here somewhere.... its got a nice flat curve actually making it somewhat drivable for a 383. but yes, i do and will miss stomping vipers into the ground like cheap european imports. the good news is most of the people in my town know about the engine and some have tried to race me(ie stupid fool in viper) but not many know its gone, so i havent had anyone challenge me for about 4-5 days. they just all wave  ill have to come up with an excuse like "i cant afford a ticket right now" or " do you really want to try cause if you lose ill have to take a picture and put it up on the billboard with the rest of them" if i find it (and im sure i will) ill be sure to post it. look for me. by the way, ill be changing my name soon ill post that with the dyno chart. i have it in a folder around my room somewhere, i swear to god. i had to put it into a plastic sleeve to keep the drool off of it. :yesnod:
good luck to all of you out there perhaps i will one day once again have a torque-thumper 383. heck, at 7k a whack and selling for even 8-9k with mainly bolt ons and not alot of labor, maybe i should mass-produce these suckers. hehe no i dont have the energy.

Couldbefun:

So, you really liked the HT 383 as a basis for a monster buildup? I've read all of the articles in CHP and Hot Rod and was thinking of using it. You made 600+hp with Vortec heads?!?!? That's awesome. Did you flowbench them before you bolted them on? I'd love to see how they flowed with some porting. Kinda makes me rethink the AFR 195s that I was eyeing for $1250. For pistons, did you stay with hypereutectic or go to forged? Just wondering if you replaced with KB just for the 1/2 point CR bump or because you didn't think the stockers would hold up...
Thanks.

Do you know if the guy that bought the 383 for 9K would be interested in some ocean front property?

I still don't get how you can get 600 Ft/lbs out of a 383.
thats 1.56 Ft/Lbs per in3!
At that rate my 434 would have 680 ft/lbs  I 'Only' have 500 ft/lbs:rolleyes:

I guess I'd even be skeptical if I saw a dyno sheet since there's no way to link the paper to the engine...

* comp cams high duration cam ...Specs?
* torkman headers ....Primary dia?
edelbrock intake manifold ...Which one?

yep....

ok so i finally dropped my blown 383 beast in the car. immediatley tore the rear end out... i guess 600 lb-ft does that to a car... but anyway, what is everyone out there using for high power/tq motors? i got around 600 lb-ft and 540 hp at the wheels using a 4 bolt 383 with modified driveline, centerforce racing clutch, mag flywheel, reinforced original 4 speed. nothin but the rear end has given out, everything else should be fine if not slighty overbuilt... but what are you guys using for a rear end? im looking at a 9" w/a spool or locker of some sort... im runnin on wider stock-style rims with street drag radials.... also if someone out there is running a motor around 400-500 hp and around 500 lb ft of tq send me a tell or a post as i can easily(and will) drop some power to get a driveable car ive even considered just selling the 383 and settling for a zz4 thanks all

couldbefun,
Are you still going to install that 9" rear end that you ordered for it back in march?

I have yet to meet anyone that was happy with their 383. Most of them are Crap. It takes a lot of expertise and a ton of money to build an engine correctly. The local speed shop guys get a kick out the duds that try to piece a 383 together.

It's no harder to build a good 383 than it is any other size engine.

BTW, I love my 383.

I know what you mean, 383s being junk and all. Chevy High Performance has tried again and again to build one to no avail. It's just not possible. :bs

I also love my 383. I have not had any trouble with the engine at all. Plenty of power for my and very reliable.
