ok, so i know i got a l-82 car. so i know it came with a L-82 engine. was that the only difference? was L-82 an engine package or an upgrade on some other things too? some people tell me it means i got a th400 tranny and some say otherwise!! help im confused
Yes, The L-82 was a upgraded engine. It came with a forged crank, 2.02/1.60 valves in the heads and a slightly higher compression than its L-48 counterpart. Can't remember the HP rating but had a few more horses, around 220 I think.

My 1977 owners manual says the L-48's came with 8.5:1 compression and 3.08 gear with the auto tranny...3.36's for the 4-spd.
The L-82's are 9.0:1 compression and came standard with a 3.55 rear ratio for the auto and 3:70's for the 4-spd.
My 77 L-82 which I purchased in stock form has the Turbo 400 and did have the 3.55 rearend ratio. This changed from year to year so you'll probably need to find an owners manual for your particular year. Deen
thanks all. this has cleared up a lot of :bs people have been telling me. one person said that the L-82's came without posi(i already knew that was a load of bs.) and another tried telling me that the rear end on an L-82 was beefier. then again, these are the same people who ask me " is it a stingray??" haha. yah, sure itsa stingray i just took the emblem off. really.
i dont even try to explain that there is no difference antymore. theres just too many ignorants to educate. thanks again everybody
I notice by your sig you have a muncie. I have a 77 with a 79 L82 engine and a muncie. There mustn't be many of us with the muncie in place of the t10.

thanks tom for the info. and bobb you may be right, as it is the only one ive found with a muncie. i love it couldnt live driving a nice car like this w/out being able to shift the beast. just my opinion.
