Gas Pedal Assembly Differences
I am trying to figure something out for my son. He needs to know if there are any differences in the gas pedal assemblies from the 68-82. If so can you help me with the differences. We know for the most part they are essentially the same but are there any differences that would keep you from mounting an 82 pedal in a 68 or vice versa.
The 68 and early 69's used a different accelerator rod and firewall swivel bracket, than 69L-82's. The 68-69E uses a rod with a separate lever, and a pivot bracket that held the rod away from the firewall. The 69L-82 uses a one piece rod, and the rod pivots by being sandwiched to the firewall by the bracket. The 68-69E bracket tends to break, which is probably why it was redesigned.
Between 68 and 82, there are 4 different accelerator cables; 68-73, 74, 75-81 and 82. The 68-73 cable attaches to the rod slightly differently than the 74-82 cables. The 68-72 gas pedal is larger than the 73-82 pedal, but they both mount using the same pin and spring, and are interchangable.
Both set ups are "basically" the same, so it is possible to use one in the other. That being said, I believe it would be easier, and more practicle, to use the 69L-82 rod and bracket in the 68, than the other way around. The 69 up set up is just a better design and adapting the cable to the later style rod would be easier.
