Default 78 question (alternator)

Does the '78 have an external voltage regulator?

The battery has been draining dead for a while after a few days. Whenever I start the car if I forget to rev it up, the battery indicator shows about 12 charge. After revving it jumps to about 15-16 or so. I'm thinking the voltage regulator is bad but I don't want to go out and tromp through the snow to my shop just to look in there.

Also, do you all use the green or orange coolant? Guy at autozone said orange.

Does your "GEN" light come on? Makes no diff. what color the coolant is unless you are below -34. I use green, good to - 34 @50/50

the GEN light doesn't come on... however I'm not entirely sure it would come on. The fasten seatbelt (center console) and the brake light (between the tac/speedo) do come on.

Should come on when you turn the key on before starting to show you that it isn't burnt out

have you done a forum search ? I had somewhat the same problem. My gen light stayed on but, dim. gauge showed about 14.5, batt. went dead after 2 days. took to autozone, they said ok. Went back 2 days later, took both batt. and alt. Batt. had bad cell, alt was over charging. Replaced both, no problems. Gen light compleats circut or trigers alt.
