Default Forum messages too w i d e

seems that somehow there is allmost allways a horizontal scroll bar on the text of most messages....and the message width varies from post to post...
I THINK it has to do with the poster's word wrap settings, which should be set at 80 spaces per line in the email/whatever ....

some postings are easy to read, some just require centering on the screen and so that the advertisements on the right and or left do not appear....

and some are to completely off screen the scroll bar is an inch wide, and if that is even similar to being the case....
it's UNREADABLE!!!! too much to manage with all that damn pring flying by and scrolling horizontally.....so I just skip the posts, mostly...

I don't know if this poopieuation is correctable or not....
so I inquired of Troy once, and he made some suggestions...but they are no panacea....there is a user friendly format change needed here....
other sites with similar functions do not have this problem....

I believe the problem lies in the size of some pics that are posted. When a wide pic is posted it seems to be the point when the width explodes.

Yes it is largel associated with the large pictures...but even then SOME posts in the thread are appropriate width...not needing any horizontal scroll action...
but somehow there is needed a way to automatically size the pictures to fit a normal screen....IE reduce size appearance on screen....

I notice with my Kodac camera the pictures can be HUGE....and to me that 's just silly...as no one views them that size, not on a computer anyway....
and I find Kodak software seems to not alow total size compression....and insists on posting 500k images....as in like forget it without cable modem....
and that 500k is .jpg too boot....

Digital cameras take pictures in high resolution for printing purposes.

It's true that you'll never display it that large on a computer screen, but if you want to print it it will print out much smaller and sharper.

It is simple to use software like Microsoft Photo Editor, Photoshop or other photo/image viewing software to reduce the size of pictures before posting. It's just something that has to be learned.

Maybe we need a FAQ about reducing image sizes before posting...

For that reason I always set my pics at 550x365 pixels. I use PaintShop Pro from JASC Software to re-size.

It's best to use a paint program like photshop or corel to adjust your image. Ie. you can reduce the image size and increase/decrease resolution if need be. Then you can email or posts the samller image using your dial up a lot faster.

Looks like minimum browswer window size is about 850 pixels before the scroll bar shows up.

You should change to a higher screen resolution, Gene, say 1024 x 768.

Me, I run 1920 x 1200 on a 24" monitor. Even the big pix don't make much of a problem.

:yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

If you have Microsoft Front Page, it includes a separate program called Image Composer......makes it easy to size photos. I usually set mine to 700 pixels WIDE and let the software "maintain the aspect ratio" meaning let it set the height appropriately to keep the image from looking squashed or stretched.

Examples........
194 pixels wide:

500 pixels wide:

700 pixels wide:

Many other programs that come bundled with scanners will do this without much angst. Good luck.

Funny you should mention this. I was trying to figure this out a few minutes ago. I changed my profile options to "small" font and solved the problem. Font is smaller but it fits in the page now. Guess I'll need to wear my stronger reading glasses now. :D Try it you'll like it...

The problem lies in the width of the PICs in the signature. It is also a problem when people post side by side pics...

Gene,

I have a Sony GDM-FW900 24" wide-format (16 by 10 ratio) monitor. See: http://www.sonystyle.com/vaio/displays/gdm_fw900.shtml

I do a lot of photo work as a hobby, and I'm a software engineer by trade. I learned long ago, after I started needing glasses, never again to skimp on a video display.

Also creating a text line with no breaks will increase the window size,
so whatever you do, don't do this:

Ironically, this thread is too wide for my 1024x768 screen! And I have turned off pictures in signatures, too. The widest thread is not Desertdawgs xxxxxx's, it is the three URLs in Barry's70LT1 signature. No offense meant, Barry. There are no spaces between them, so it can't word wrap, I guess. Perhaps the forum gurus can do something about word wrapping. It seems to be happening in more and more threads. WAWAWA. :cry Joe

Funny enough, though, is if you had the images on it would be shorter. :D

Actually, that 700 pixel wide image posted by 67HEAVEN would probably cause scrolling too if it weren't for the other...

The best solution is of course that members resize and compress the images before posting.
But it's also possible to run programs at the server to place limits on image and file size and adjust them accordingly.

(I saw Troy asked about this at the Zeroforum support and they said it was not possible, which is wrong)

Another problem is the way Zeroforum "render" the html if the user has turned off image display.
If you have a clickable image (f.ex in you signature), the link that show up will be to the image, not to the URL it was meant to.

This I would consider a bug is the Zeroforum script.

Just use a smaller font, like 3-4 point, that will help :D:D
