I'm getting ready to pull the manifold on my stock '76 to bead blast the orange paint off. Is there much of an advantage to replace it with something a little better? I've seen dozens listed that fit that motor but I really don't know much about them. I wouldn't mind a little more hp, but I don't want something so tall that I can't close the hood.
Any thoughts?
Fitting the motor isn't the problem, it's fitting under the hood. You wouldn't see much if any improvement on a stock 76 engine IMHO.
If you ever invest in heads or a cam then go for it!
Clean up the stock intake and put a carb spacer in it. Tweak the carb or something. Not sure exactly how much higher you can go and keep stockish stuff in. You can get a regular aftermarket aluminum intake with bigger runners? But that might lead to wanting to matching with the heads. Chain of events here could lead into a body off restoration if you let it happen. Just saying
The plain jane, garden variety Edelbrock Performer spreadbore intake manifold is not a whole lot taller than a stock cast iron one, if at all. And you can find 'em just laying around in the sreet sometimes, it seems like. Go on Ebay or craigslist, you can get one for a song. Literally, I have seen 'em for 20 bucks. 2101 is the part number, I believe. It won't do a whole lot for power, but it sure as hell won't hurt, plus, it weighs less, which is not a bad thing, plus, anytime you replace cast iron with aluminum, it just has a kind of "coolness factor" to it. Clean up that old cast iron manifold, and display it in yer garage, or shop, or maybe the living room, if you are single and want to stay that way.....
lol Zlover, I realize I'm on a slippery slope. Funds are tight this time of year so I'm going to stick with just the manifold and matching valve covers.
The edlebrock 2101 looks like the way to go and I did see some cheap used one on Ebay. Thanks for the input guys.
Stay with the factory manifold. It was made for low to mid range torque. On a stock engine the only advantage you will get from aftermarket manifold is weight savings.
