Need 4Spd Trans I.D. Help
-------------------------------------
4/6 C1C2&Resto-Can anyone help in the I.D.ing this T-10?
Main case is cast iron, then an aluminum spacer, then cast iron rear case.
Front case cast in numbers are: 11/69 and T10-1B over W.G.DIV. Stamped next to the 9 bolt curved bottom cover is: WD 2892. Cast in the rear case is B.18.74. It has a fine spline output shaft.

4/6 C1C2 Ans-I think you have a first design ST10.

4/8 My response-Thanks. I'm looking for a little more info if it's out there like is it cobbeled together and do the main case and tail shaft go together as a factory unit. What year(s) are represented by the numbers, etc. ANYBODY? Thanks, Frank

4/8 Resto Ans-With the "aluminum spacer" it sounds like a "Super T-10". I don`t think the early T-10 had the midplate. Is the input shaft coarse or fine and how many rings???????
----------------------------------------
4/9 My response-I agree that the early T-10's didn't have any spacer, at least any that I remember. Some of the markings imply that it's a late model T-10 and could be a super type. Where I'm confused is the cast iron case and tail shaft housing. I thought that stuff went south in the late 50's. Here's some more info and answers to your questions. Course or fine input shaft; course I guess. 10 Spline (normal old G.M.), no rings, fine spline output like turbo 350. Two slightly overlapping sets of shifter mount holes. I think they are all tapped, but I guess I need to look tonight.
---------------------------------------------
4/9 Resto Ans- I made an error, the t-10 DID have a mid plate, BUT if your sure it`s the small (T-350) output shaft then it`s probably a T-10 and not a "Super".

4/9 My Response-WOW, that was quick! It really had a spacer? Boy I don't remember that at all. I posted on the C3 board this morning in hopes of getting some other responses as I thought it was leaning towards a super T-10 that I thought came out in the late 60's+. I'll edit and add your correction. What about that cast iron thing? Did they use cast iron after the late 50's? Thanks, Frank

It is a cast iron unit. The aluminum case started going into vettes in early 61.
Now this part is from memory so I could use some verification (I used to be into 409's). I believe the WD 2892 is a date code. I THINK it means April 28, 1959 with the final 2 meaning second shift. Can anyone confirm this?

Frank, is the part that has the 74 number on it an aluminum part?
As Paul said, maybe they started with a T10-1B case and added parts from newer units.

This post would seem to confirm the date coding on the main case: http://archives.gigo.com/crpl/2001-12/msg00140.html
Keep in mind that the VIN stamping he speaks of was not used until 1962 so yours probably doesn't have one.
I think you can tell the internals by the splines.
This site shows the T10 splines at 10in and 16out while the later SuperT10 had 26in and 32out.
I'm not sure of the sites accuracy but it seems plausable. http://www.angelfire.com/sd/BSP/tech.html
Here's a breakdown diagram and part numbers for the early T10. Is there any part numbers on the possibly late casting? You may be able to confirm if it's a replacement or not by the part number. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to see this one: http://www.autogear.net/pdfs/T10%20booklet.pdf
