I decided to change the gauge faces in my 72. Pretty easy job going from faded white letters on flat black backgrounds to black letters on shiny white backgrounds.
Now I'm swapping the Amp gauge for a Volt gauge. Another easy change, removing the '72 BATTERY gauge and installing a '77 VOLTS gauge in its place.
New problem is that the gauge face design is different. I've ordered a white face kit for a '78-'82 and it'll hopefully look OK. What I'd really like to do is put a custom white vinyl face on the '77. The vinyl would have 8, 13 and 18 instead of -40, 0 and +40 and it would still have BATTERY as the label. Here's my rough rendering on a stock face:
I'm contacting White Face Gauges to see if they'll make a custom face for me. Along with the stock and white face gauges, they do all kinds of colors and textures. http://whitegauges.net/
Is anyone interested in this?
I really like this..........how do they get installed?
The site says the needles don't need to come off.
Are they stickers? or just lay on top? Pics of the install would be great. Thanks!
The install was pretty simple. I cleaned the gauge faces with paint prep cleaners and q-tips, then you peel the vinyl decal off the backing and spray some soapy water on it. The vinyl is flexible enough to stretch over the needle and the adhesive is forgiving so you can peel the vinyl off and re-align it if it isn't perfect on the first shot. Their instructions might be a little clearer. http://ebay.whitegauges.net/products...8-1982-159.gif
It is possible to screw this up by using too powerful a heat gun to get the last bit of water out from under the vinyl. They sent me a new tach face when I overheated mine.
My interior is at the seat-frame sandblasting stage but here's a picture of the small gauge cluster with modified bezel and Speedo/Tach cluster.
I looked at this, decided to just go with Autometer Phantoms.
$500 for new gauges that I might not be crazy about was too big a risk. With all the stuff I was doing to the car, $39 (now $19) to try the white face gauges seemed like a cheap modification.
If I end up not liking the white faces, I can take 'em off and replace them...
