Well, it's been about 20 months since I've been on here but the 'Vette is back up and running and I'm back up and into fixing little things here and there (and there are A LOT of little things).
I've been researching what to use to lubricate my door latch know that I've removed it and cleaned it off with brake cleaner. The majority of threads point to using white lithium grease for lubircation. So I went to O'Reilly's, Pep Boys, and Autozone (not necessarily in that order) and all of them only had Multi Purpose lithium grease. Is it okay to use that on the door latch to lube it up? Most of the Mulit Purpose stuff was kindof translucent/yellowish in color. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Glad to be back!
Thanks for the replies! Now, another question I didn't think to ask is aerosol can vs a tub o' grease? Does it really matter? Since I have the whole latch assembly removed should I find a tub of the stuff and go to town or will spraying it do just as well?
Over the decades, I have removed enough white lube/Lithium grease that is all dried out and gummy as a bear.....
I just use a pan of gasoline to remove all of it from the parts, and assemble dry or with a shot of WD40....been that way for years now in all the door/window mechanisms...put some wheel bearing grease on the sector gear to prevent rust...
Wow, that's amazing. All that I've read suggests to lube up the parts with grease, but obviously none/shot of WD40 is working for you. With that being said, how big of a deal is it if I just grab some of the Amber Lithium Grease at my local parts store and mildly coat all the moving parts on my latch? Is White Lithium Grease really going to make that big of a difference especially if mrvette is having success using little to no WD40? I realize that everone's experience varies and am just looking for opinions. Thanks all!
After reading the replies and from all my searching on the forum, White Lithium Grease is def. the standard around here. I still don't quite understand what makes it any better than other lithium grease but I trust the forum. As a result, my patience has paid off! I FINALLY found some white lithium grease. I went to Car Quest and they usually carry the tub but were out and only had the spray so I picked it up just in case. I then went to NAPA and they had a tub of White Lithium Grease!!! So, thanks for all the information and it's time to get lubin'!
