Default starter question

what would cause me to have power to the red wire going to the starter even with the key out of the car? Ignition switch? I can turn the key back to the accessory position so i think maybe the switch needs to be adjusted in the column.

Well, the big red wire is the battery cable, is it on the same post?

it is the red wire that goes to the solenoid, not the cable.

What symptoms are you having? It tries to start all the time? Does the key action feel right? Springy start position? Acc mode click correctly back?

well it started when i hooked up the battery backwards (i know very stupid) The fusible link burned out but with all the smoke pretty sure i burnrd up the solenoid even though the key was never in it when i hooked it up backwards. The start position is pretty springy. But because of the lack of acc position i thought the switch could be off one.

If the red wire you are speaking of goes to the R terminal on the solenoid, it's only supposed to be hot when the ignition is on, it's to power the coil while starting. If it's hot all the time, you wouldn't be able to turn the car off with the key. What year car is yours?

Is it possible for you to take a pic of the starter wiring as it is now? It sounds like things weren't connected correctly or the burned link wire melted the red wire to itself. Possibly describe the wiring to the solenoid.

The R terminal wire should be yellow, the S terminal wire should be purple, the wire going to the big terminal should be the battery cable and a red wire that has a fusible link in it. There should be another black wire with a big eyelet that goes to a ground, either on a starter bolt or a tranny bolt.

The red wire is connected to the same post as the battery cable? Then it's supposed to be hot all the time.

Yes, it's connected directly to the battey cable, which is connected directly to the battery. That little red wire powers the rest of the car. Disconnect that wire and the car is basically dead. I believe you are good to go... except for the key not turning the ignitiion switch to acc.
