No you do not need to remove the trany, I installed a hurst shifter in my 80. You will need to get the car up enough to work under it. The Hurst shifter is much better than the stock shifter, you will love it.

My plan was to install the linkage kit with original shifter/lever, would it be possible?.

I don't think so. Zip sells a vette style shifter for the Hurst linkage, part # ST-372.

If you've owned your vette for more than a week, you realize that an extra $80 is just a drop in the bucket (or the ocean). We should run a poll on fixer-uppers. I'll bet that most guys end up spending more to fix up their car than they spent to buy the "bargain".!!

No it will not work, you will need the Hurst linkage, as it is different from the stock linkage.

Regards,
If your adding this into the car in your avatar (69?) you might find as I did needing to cut about a 1/2 inch off the 1st - 2nd linkage rod. It would'nt go ito 1st gear because of hitting something (can't remember exactly what the rod was hitting) just a heads up incase you have the same isssue. you'll love it.

The idea was to get a kit to "stiff" the shifter a bit, but I got the wrong part, so will sell it and get a rebuild kit instead.

I bought this from CC it is great with the stock looking shifter handle, it shortened the throw prolly 30 to 40 % and much more positve feel.

Regards,
I replaced my old hurst setup with a new one a couple years ago, and no you dont have to remove the trans. I do recall that it was a tight area to work in, but if I can do it so can you

CAn you adjust the shifter on a 76 BW to remove too much excess "play"? It shifts fine, just seems the "throw" goes a little too far in the console.

One of the vendors was selling a "Stock" looking shift lever and **** that would fit a Hurst tower and linkage. I am not sure if its available or not

I found it http://www.ecklers.com/corvette-shif...1968-1976.html
