I am in the process of repairing rust on the windshield frame. I have all the molding and weatherstripping removed an the top of the windshiel will move when pushed from inside the car. Does the dash pad need to be removed to do the wire cutting deal? If it does need to be removed how does one go about the dash pad removal? I have looked in variopus manuals and The AIM but I can't seem to find any info. Any help is appreciated.
You can kiss that windshield goodbye. It is almost impossible to get it out without cracking it and probably not worth the effort. Besides, a new windshield is so much nicer than an old pitted one. I got a PPG replacement for less then $200. Do the wire thing as far down as you can and then just bust it out and use a scraper to get the rest off the frame. Cover the dash with paper or plastic first or you will have glass in your dash for a long time.
Do a search in the archives for tips on replacement. There was a lot of folks replacing theirs six months ago.
Not necessarily true. I would have a professional handle this. I had my ORIGINAL windshield removed, cleaned, polished and replaced. The guys came out to my house, carefully removed the glass, and came back a few days later after I'd cleaned and painted the metal frame (there was only a little surface rust but I wanted to be safe).
Total cost was $110.
So, if you're careful you can re-use the glass. Also, since it sounds like your original seal is bad that may make the job easier.
The thing is there are no guarantees. Even the guy that came out told me there was a possibility that the glass would break. So, I took the gamble and it paid off.
Thanks for the advise I was planning on having a Glassman do the removal and re- installation but I was worried about the dash pad as it is in good shape
I just got done with this job. Dash pad does not have to come out, but I don't for the life of me see how you would get one of these out without breaking it. I paid $125 bucks for mine, PPG glass, so they really aren't that expensive if it does break.
Only $125 for a new windshield ? That does not seem bad. When I checked the date code it appears that the windshield is not the origional anyway so it would seem that I don't have much to lose. Thanks all for the advise.
