Default Engine Decode Question

I have a '72 Corvette and am trying figure out what application the engine came out of.

Here is the information I have so far:

Casting number is 3970010 which we all know is a very common block.

Here is a picture of the pad...

V0224CHJ
18S234127

According to my resources the suffix code CHJ identifies as:

CHJ 1973 307 115 2 m/t, NB2
CHJ 1978 350 170 4 auto trans. LM1

Not sure what NB2 or LM1 is. The thing that confuses me is the partial VIN 18S234127. To me that looks like a Corvette partial VIN but referencing the Black Book, there doesn't appear to be any ending serial numbers that fit this range (234127). If it is a Camaro engine, that partial VIN doesn't seem to match either.

Am I correct in thinking the "S" in the partial VIN correlates to the 7th digit in the VIN "S" as the assembly location?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

It's this one as the '73 variant would have had the long skinny pad and not the later square pad as seen here. LM1 is a base engine 350 Cu in.with 4bbl Qjet carb.

You wanted ideas

According to the NASTYZ28 site, the block was found in "B" & "F" bodies.

CHJ 1978 350 auto trans. LM1 "L" 170 4 "B, F"

The 78 Chevrolet chassis manual lists b as Impala or Caprice, and f car as Camaro & Camaro type LT.

1 Chev motor division
8 designates 1978 (Position #6)
S=GMAD St. Louis (Position #7)

Again that site states L in the vin which stands for Impala, so perhaps it is from a 78 Impala?

Good luck on your search.

The VIN derivitive is not Corvette. GM also made Impalas at the St. Louis facility.
