I am in the process of installing front bearings on my 81. The inner bearing is binding on the spindle. Same number as the old bearing. Does the new bearing need to be peened on?
With the inner bearing and seal installed in the hub, the hub and bearing should slide all the way onto the spindle. Sometimes, because the inner bearing is loose inside the hub before installation, it is a little difficult to align and slide onto the spindle. If after a few tries it does not go on, you might want to remove the inner bearing from the hub and try to slide the bearing itself onto the spindle to check the fit. Maybe it was manufactured wrong or could the spindle surface be damaged (slight nick etc.) preventing the bearing from sliding on? Good luck.
I used my trusty micrometer to check bearing race size old to new. New was .004 smaller than old bearing. Went back to O' Reiley they had several in stock, bad product all were the same. Interesting that both old and new were Timkin. old marked as such new just had the same model number. Tried another brand and it fit.
