Default Q-jet metering rods

Hi, all,

I have a Summit Racing Q-jet on my 1980 'vette (When I bought it, it had a leaky old holley with an adapter for the spreadbore manifold), it has a 50M primary metering rod, does this rod have a .036 power tip? And if so, should I stay with metering rods that have a .036 power tip or switch to .026 power tips? And if I should change to .026 tips, what is the best way to do this as far as keeping the metering area the same?

M rod have the .036 "truck" power tip. If you swap to normal rods with the .026 power tip, you will also need to change the jets to maintain the same area under WOT.

Yeah, I kinda figure that if I go to .026 power tips, I'll just need to change to a smaller jet to keep the same metering area, and a correspondingly smaller rod to keep the same idle metering area, and go from there. Is this worth doing or should I just stay with what I have, and use .036 power tip rods to make adjustments?

The correct k-series .026 rods are no longer made. You'll have to use the m-series rods and size up the jet accordingly. I went through this hassle a couple years ago. (And it was this among other things that ultimately made me switch to a Summit Racing Holley clone)

Found this web site a couple of weeks ago and haven't seen it posted anywhere on the forum yet. LOTS of Quadrajet parts:

QuadrajetParts.com

I have no experience with or connection to the company.

OK, sounds like it's not a big deal, I'll just have to do my own math, instead of using the chart on Lars's paper, I can handle it.

QuadrajetParts.com.
They sell only one size of the "K" rod which is the small tip for 1975 and later carbs. 44/26.

Carburetion.com doesn't sell K rods.

First, you should 'mike' the rods you have.

Yep

I'm telling you, you'll pull your hair out trying to find the right k-series rods. They are no longer manufactured. I have heard of guys turning down the truck rods on a hobby lathe, but that is beyond my capability.

What is up with that? if there is a demand for them, why isn't somebody filling it?

OK, so I guess I'm stuck with four primary metering rods to choose from. Doesn't seem like a lot, there are a wide variety of sizes on the pre-1975 rods.

Could I ask for some advice from the q-jet gurus out there? I'll start from the beginning. When I bought my 'vette, it had a leaky old holley 600 on it. I got rid of it and purchased a q-jet from Summit Racing. (SUM-210216 - Summit Racing® Remanufactured Quadrajet) It has .073 primary main jets, 50M primary metering rods, and DR secondary metering rods. I have since found out that my 'vette originally came with a 17080204 Q-jet, with .071 main jets, 42 primary metering rods, and CH secondary metering rods. The metering areas at both WOT and isle are richer on the 17080204 (original stock carb) and the only engine mods are a Performer intake manifold, block-hugger headers, and a 2 1/2 inch dual exhaust with magnaflow mufflers. Should I try to get as close as I can to the stock carbs metering areas, and tune from there, or just start playing around with what I already have? The car runs OK now, so I suspect I should just start from where I am.
