I'm reading threads on sealing engine oil leaks - and need to do the same for gear oil leaks from Muncie 4-speeds - but I'd like to refresh anything I can while in there. My car is a '69 coupe that has been a bit neglected.
I'm not an engine builder, but am enjoying a return to my former 'shade tree mechanic' glory days. I study the major assemblies, but do not have much experience taking the engine apart, aside from carburetor swap and distributor adjustments.
My "rebuilt 350, 4-bolt truck block with the 'Corvette' 202 heads" (according to the PO) with who knows how many miles on it needs to give me some good fun service for a few years while I save for the eventual new one. I already caught the PO running rust water in place of coolant (with no thermostat) and some of the darkest oil I have ever seen.
In addition to other leaks that must be everywhere, including the transmission (from crawling underneath), the oil pan itself leaks. The oil pan is JB Welded (with a small screw in the "weld") and I'm replacing it.
If you care to think about/share your opinion, - what would you look for/at and refresh while the pan is off? I guess I'm thinking oil pump components, - can they be 'refreshed' ? Anything else ?
I'm sorry to be long-winded - I just can't seem to help it.
reinstall the pan with a one piece fel-pro gasket......Melling oil pump M55-hv. replace the pan with a Canton oil pan 6qt,,,,comes with a scraper and windage screen in the pan,,,you can use the pan later when you have a engine build later on, replace the rear seal +1.
