OK. Doing a number of changes to my 70 L-46. I'll start with this.
Putting a 6AL in with my stock distributor. I do have a pertronics in it though. How does the 6 al install?(points, aftermarket, mag pulse directions?)
I will be going to a MSD corvette billet ditributor next.(unless thats a problem for my holley pro-jection I'm going to install)I'll save that for another post. Thanks Dennis
Thanks for the info. Hows that cam on the low end? The stock piece is a real dog out of the gate. Does the MSD distributor use the magnetic connector on the 6AL box?
One last thing, what width wheels(8, 10, etc) you runing with those tires?
Connect the black wire from the PerTronix to the white trigger wire of the MSD box. The red wire from the Ignitor does not go to the coil+ as with a typical Ignitor hookup. It must be connected to a power source from the ignition switch. It can connect to the same source as the smaller diameter red wire from the MSD. The rest of the MSD wires connect per the instructions.
coupedude,
I have 2 wires from the original engine harness going to the + side of the coil. I think 1 of them comes from the starter as a switched power source. The other goes to the fuse block. Should I tie those 2 with the pertronic red and 6AL red for the power? The only wires dirrectly connected to the coil are the 2 from the 6AL box.? Thanks for all your help
Connecting the MSD small red wire and the PerTronix red wire to the two wires that used to go to coil+ will probably work okay. You'll get a full 12 V when cranking but it will drop off to around 8-9 V when the key is in the "on" position. There's a voltage drop because the power is coming through the resistor wire. If you have any ignition problem with that setup try connecting the two red wires to a full 12 V source from the ignition switch. That would solve it.
Did this about 5 months ago. DO NOT USE the Flamethrower coil if you have it. It is not compatible with a CD ignition system (6AL). The "fine print" on the Flamethrower coil states this, but NOTHING in the Pertronix directions or the MSD directions stated this. HAd me stumped for awhile!!

for the coil just get a blaster by MSD , not too pricey.
My Cam is a little loopy, but the motors torqy at the low end. really pulls from 2K up.
The MSD tach drive dist used the magnetic pickup (purple/green) wires on the 6AL.
I'm running the stock Vette Alum wheels from 78-82, 8", just because thats what I have. I want something else but $$$$$

Your right the direction are a little vague. Probobly go witht he MSD coil.

I hink I got it. If I connect the 2 reds to a 12v source, what do I do with the 2 wires from the harness? Tape them off? They aren't connected to the coil anymore, right?

I asked about the wheels because I found a set of old 3 piece alloy. The problem is their 16x10's. Don't know if they'll fit. Don't think their available anymore, and to downsize them to 16x8 will cost about $400.00 a wheel!( I don't like them that much.
Thanks everyone. Next problem: gettingthe upgrade ignition to work with the holley pro-jection digital. Another day, another post
