I have a chip in my drivers window & I also believe I have a bad gear that rolls the window up & down (not in the electric motor). Has anybody replaced these before & if you have, can you give me some advice on what not to do. Better yet, tell me what to do. :-)
I have done it. I replaced the gear on the window regulator, and had everything inside the door out for a cleanup/inspection. When you put the gear on be careful about the tension on the spring. The arm can spring back and hit you when you take the motor off. Other than that, you just have to tear into it. It takes a LOT of time, and even more patience. It is certainly no fun working in these doors, but it can be done. It is more than can be explained.
I also replaced all the wear items in my door. All rollers will probably need attention. The gear on the regulator and take a good look at the gear on the motor too. Mine was worn really bad. the previous owner said he replaced the regulator gear not too long ogo and when I got to looking the gear on the motor was probably what caused the regulator gear to wear so fast. I do have to agree that the PIA factor is very high on this job but when all is said and done the satisfaction factor is even higher. Patience is definitely needed and time is too. If you try to rush it forget it.
If you haven't done it, I wasn't sure even with the shop manual, and figured it was beyond my limit. I got new GM parts and had a dealer install. They had the rivets to put the regulator back and mine needed a motor too. They have to warranty their work so I am satisfied. Labor was flat book and I did buy my own and saved some $$ on new GM parts, they can't install aftermarket. I am going to try to adjust/align my 82's and fix the locks. I can do that. :smash:
Haven't done it yet, but I have a chip in my drivers side window, plus if won't go up the whole way with the door closed. On my to do list one I get it on the road.
