Default 69/350 alternator, sorry long post

In a previous post, the brown/white stripe wire coming from the black alternator wire basically burned up to the firewall last week. Well except about 3 inches to where it goes into the wall, so I crimped a new wire from that point back to the alternator, at this point the only reason I can think of is a short caused by the top kick panel driver side, screw that holds the courtesy light went in to a 4 or 5 wire loom and screwed in one of the black wires, found that wire seamed to be OK, anyway replaced wire from fire wall to alternator started car, Oh all lights and gauges work. the Car starts every thing worked, except alternator charging, polarized the alt now charging at 13.6. At that point everything seamed to be all right. this morning i started car to take a little ride car starts up so i decided to double check the alternator output 25.8 rechecked in different places then went to the battery same 25.8 volts, darn something is wrong and the alt felt hot, car was only running for 3 to 5 min. Then the same wire started smoking again but only at the outside fire wall, that 3 inch piece i attached a new wire to, not the new wire, so question is, is my alternator fried and causing this wire to burn there are no burnt wires on the inside of the fire wall, that I can see now but Ill keep looking any ideas. by the way the wire that is burning is a single strand wire farley thin at that. THANKS for all the help, yes I have the 69 wiring diagram, but I'm half knowledgeable about reading it and making sense out of it.

Default 69 Alternator

After looking at Mid Americas wiring diagram on p,j298 bulkhead connection next to fender in engine compartment wire#16 Brown/White stripe wire goes to the ammeter, leaves there as #16 black wire and goes to the bulkhead connection next to the other bulkhead connection and back to the engine compartment, but at this point I'm not sure where it goes, looks like to just branches off to different accessories turn sig, radio capac, ign switch, exct. Any comment or thoughts Thanks
