I sent my rear out to a local guy to get 3.55 gears put in. He called me yesterday and swine he can't find the right ring and pinion set. He said he tried 3 different sets and none fit. Does anyone know what kind I need and where I can get them.
Thanks for any help
I purchased a ring and pinion for my 80 at Randys (online), they seemed to have anything you would ever want. I got a 4.10 and a bearing and installation kit for the 80. Hope this helps.
I have a new 3.73 that I KNOW will fit if you're interested. There are very few vendors that stock 80-82 Vette rear gears. I looked what felt like forever before I found the 3.73s that I have. I bought 2 sets and used 1 of them.
We offer several ratios for these diffs, and we have the 3.54 in stock.
Give me a call if you have any questions.

Tom, I gotta ask... what makes your 3.07 ratio so special that it costs $120 MORE than any other gear? Is that the 'replacement' gear that people buy the most?

I would like to day it is a super duty special gear, but it is no different from the other ones. The reason that it is more expensive is that is how it comes into us from the supplier. The reason they get more money for it is because it is a low quantity run gear vs. a 3.54 or 3.73 or 4.10 gear. So with less quantity the price goes up
Thanks

I need to pull my receipts, but I think I got my 3:54 ring/pinion from Zips. Not sure.
Tom or Justin, where does Zips get their gear sets? Who and where is the manufacturer?
Think about this for a second. IF your mechanic can not even find the correct ring and pinion, do you really think he can set up the gear properly? I have bought several ring and pinions from Randy's Ring and Pinion, for our 4X4's. They are really good with supplying the correct parts. Note there are several special tools need to properly set up the pinion depth and carrier side brgs. Tooth patterns, and backlash must be set perfectly or gear whine will develope. Heck you can even send you carrier assy to Randy's and have them install the gears. They do it all the time. Al
He has set up rears before but does solid axle rears. He has never worked on vette rears before so I guess he didn't know the ring and pinion had to be different nor did I
Ill be ordering them from zip's. My mechanic said he called GM and they told him the gears were the same as a 10 bolt. So they sent him gears and they were wrong of course. Thanks GM
