In the middle of checking valve to piston clearance on a 350 I noticed something a bit strange...
On a side note, valve to piston clearance was about .250" when checked parallel to the valve stem. When checking the clay depth at an angle it was much less. Unless the valve develops radial slop, I think the motor will be ok.
Alright, now to the fun stuff. What is wrong with these pictures? Look close. The winner's prize is fame and glory.
So the real question is what now? Obviously this isn't correct, but the motor ran well and has plenty of valve to piston clearance as it sits.
What am I gaining by correcting this? - I would do new rings, bearings, and machine work if necessary during the piston swap. So there is some cost involved.
What am I loosing by leaving the bottom end this way?

Thoughts please
I would pull the pan to see if the connecting rods are in the wrong place also. Since the motor has been in to it is possible that the rods are stamped.
Not only that.....but its possible the rod taper (the side facing the crank chamfer) was placed incorrectly(backwards).
Look at it as a sign from God........time to rebuild the short block. Total cost for someone else to build it right with your parts.......about $500 in Dallas, TX.

Assuming they are stamped correctly and just in the wrong holes, what will be gaining by correcting this issue? Power? Peace of mind?
My first reaction was "yank it out!" It just feels dirty and wrong.. yuck! On the other hand, the motor ran well as is.

If this were the case it would not have run very long, if at all.
Also possible that the rods are in proper place but have incorrect piston on them. I had to pull and correct a 396 one time because the guys put the drivers side pistons in upside down. They could not figure out why it would not turn one complete revoultion. good luck with it, mike...

P. S. when can I expect my fame and glory?
You already have your fame and glory, but I can offer you my prized goat..
