Default 79 Vette antenna bad.

I have a 1979 Vette with a power antenna that won't work. Can someone tell me what activates the antenna? Starting the car or turning on the radio? Also I see replacements on Ebay for $47 instead of the $100 in the catologs. Anyone have any experience with these? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :D

Are you sure it is the antenna and not the relay? Have someone turn the key to the "On" position and you put your head there to see if the motor is getting juice. Then you will know if it is the antenna or relay :yesnod:

The radio has to be on for the antenna to operate. If the radio is on then turning the key on or off will cause the antenna to extend or retact.

Try to hear for a click by the parking brake handle to see if the relay is operating. With the key on, turn the radio off and on and you should hear a click from the relay. If the relay is clicking then it is probably the antenna, if no click then either a bad relay of wiring.
