I have an edelbrock MPFI kit that I bought used to put on my 4 speed '76. It is missing the fuel pump, so I need to find one.
I was looking at getting an in-line LS1 style fuel pump with the internal regulator. This way I should be able to take the 2nd output and return it straight to the tank without running a fuel return line from the front of the car.
But... there aren't any existing 'spare' taps on the gas tank, correct? So I was thinking instead of putting the fuel return line back to the tank, I could just add a 'T' upstream of the fuel pump/regulator and put the return in there. This would essentially just be a bypass loop around the pump/regulator, which would eliminate any real work for installing the new fuel pump... basically just a couple of fittings and a tube cutter... Thoughts?
Here are some parts:
You can use the return from the filter/reg to the original return to the tank and use the returnless rail up front.
BTW, the tank has two top ports for the vapor canister and one could be used for a return, but the tank has to be dropped to get to it.
corvette filter/regulator with a return line( acdelco#gf822 or napa#3737) $50.00
double bead fuel line (dorman # 800-155) that is needed to fit into the quick release fitting on the reg. it is 12" long and has a bead on each end, cut it down only use one side.$12.00
Pictured is a Bosch 044 pump.
noonie - Sounds like you're speaking from experience. Do you have any pictures from your install? What will I need to do to tap into the original return line for the tank - is that something easy, or do I need to drop the tank?
I just helped a friend do an install on his hotrod. Don't have any pics of it.
If the regulator is mounted near the rear tank, you can just use a rubber gas hose directly to the original return port on the tank at the passenger side rear frame rail.
Dropping the tank for access is necessary.
This is just one area where there are no short cuts that work well. You won't see any shops that install FI doing it this way. If you search the sight you will find a lot of info on installing Electric Fuel Pumps in Tank. The stock Fuel Lines were never ment to be Cut and Flare'd. Once Cut that may be the end of them.
