Default Cowl induction hood addition

I recently added vortec heads and as a result edelbrock vortec performer rpm intake which resulted in me not having any hood clearance. I am tired of the drop base air cleaner search and have decided to cut a hole and add a cowl induction "scoop" if that is the correct term. Any suggestions on one that looks good on the vette and not out of place? Pictures would be great also.

You should be able to get an aircleaner that works under your hood with that setup. Moroso has a drop base that worked in my edelbrock intake. You could even go to a smaller diameter aircleaner rather than cut a hole in the hood.

I tried a drop base, but I have the summit carb, and it seems to get in the way at the bottom edge of the drop base. Anyone have a setup with the drop base on a summit carb?

I have an edelbrock carb, performer Rpm and vortec heads, I have a drop base air cleaner and it clears the hood. Not sure what drop base it is though, I'll be home next week and I could measure it for you then if you havent got it figured out

My carb is the problem. It is the Summit Racing M08600VS, which has sort of a rectangular elongated shape, rather than round. It is those two ends where fuel inlets are that are keeping the drop base that I had from fitting down over it. See pic on summit site:

Would something like this work?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-2196/

...it's only 2.5" tall according to Summit. It'd beat chopping up the hood.

That one might be worth a shot. I actually had the same idea in mind, and I used the edelbrock version, but it is 3" from base. But the hood sat right on top of it. Maybe the 1/2 inch will be enough.

What kind of carb do you have? Does it have the oblong shape like the summit?

Its a powerjection unit, but its similair to a holley carb except a little heigher. The lower part of the filter has a big dome and cleared the electrical choke on my old 4160 carb. Monday i can snap a pic without the filter and top lid if you want?

That would be great, because the summit dropbase I tried wouldn't even fit down onto carb.

I am planning on a similar install, but with a ZZ4 block, vortec heads and Eldebrock intake. I did not think there was going to be a clearance issue. Clue me in Al

Al, it really depends on what intake you plan on using. The edelbrock performer shouldn't be an issue, but if you use the performer RPM, then you may run into problems. It's pretty well documented on the forum that in many cases high rise intakes cause hood clearance issues on C3 vettes. Depending on what carb you use, you probably can get around the issue with a drop base air cleaner.

Here you go, hope it helps. You'll see there are no shapes in the bottom lid, but it clears linkage, fuel connections & choke

Nick

PS I still got the original cowl induction hood, but the flapper was removed.
