Default Side Pipes?

Do sidepipes have enough sheilding where one will not get burnt getting out of the car? Do they require different headers? Also do they put excessive heat in the rear tires?

Depends if you have the Hooker headers w/sidepipes or factory stock ones. JCL sells heat shields for the hooker ones. If you go with hookers just be careful to remember they get real hot.

Hooker sidepipes require the hooker headers, I know someone running blockhugger type headers with factory sidepipes.

No. :D

The factory style with the fiberglass shields work fine. Even on an hour drive, they get hot to the touch, but not hot enough to burn...

If you decide to go with the Hooker headers and sidepipes, get the JCL baffles. they definitly run cooler than with the Hooker muffler inserts. Also seem to cool quicker. I have had all 3 (reverse flow, glasspack, JCL) and I think I can vouch for the JCLs.

Steve,

Got em about a month or so ago. Easy install since I used PB blaster but I guess with New hookers you won't have those issues. did you get Chrome or black sidepipes (Or I think you were jet coating???)

They gave me a seat of the pants 30+ HP more but less back pressure and I think slightly less TQ at the low end. They sound a little tin canny but the power is welll worth it. My car really pulls now, I should be in the low 12s when I can get this thing to stick. I s the engine in yet???

My pipes are going to be jet-hot sterling coated, inside and out.

The engine should be here tues, supposedly. My builder was out sick for a few days last week.

What do you mean tin canney sounding? Do they sound bad, are they rattling?

I too can vouch for the effectiveness of the JCL baffles. There is no question that they flow better than anything else available. I am curious though Clink as to your comment about the sound. On mine they are far from tinny, in fact it is a much deeper sound than the stock mufflers I had on before the baffles. Check out the spiralturbospecialties website and there is a soundclip of Chuck Harmons L88 with the baffles. Now granted that is a high compression animal but my 8.75 to 1 502 sounds very similar.

Hi
Hookers are hot. Not enough shielding at all if you touch with bare skin.
My pipes are shielded, so no problem ( also not for my kids ), but don't touch the header section.
Big blocks sound cool through side pipes.

Just to throw out another option (which I usually do when a topic about Hokker mufflers come out), I have a 2.5" perferated (not the louvered type) core tube glasspack. I had to enlarge and weld the end disks from my Hooker mufflers on them and then wrap it with fiberglass and it slides in/out just like the Hooker mufflers. The parts were about $40 and just about any muffler shop should be able to do the welding for a nominal amount. A side benifet I get is that the side tubes do not get very hot because of the fiberglass. It's kind of like an internal heat shield.

My Hookers will burn you if you're not careful. Ask me how I know? Once you do this, you WILL BE CAREFUL IN THE FUTURE. The pipes are hottest at the collectors. At the end where the exhaust comes out, they are much cooler and will not affect your tires. If you have a BB, get the Hookers...you'll love 'em.
