Okay, It's exhaust time. I would like to replace the entire exhaust system on my 72 LT1. I've looked around and found many to choice from. any suggestion which package to go with mufflers. of course I need to modify it to accept the headers on the car.
If you have a set of headers the best thing to do is have one made up. Every car is different so the ones in the kits rarely fit the first time out. I had a system on mine years ago and was never thrilled with the fit or how they were made. It was made by one of the big names also. The stock mufflers are terrible in terms of performance and sound. Have a good shop bend up and fit a good 2 1/2 system with the performance mufflers of your choice. You will be rewarded wit ha good fitting good sounding and good performance system. It may cost a few more dollars but in the long run you will be miles and dollars ahead.
I agree with Gordon. Have a good shop do a complete system (2 and 1/2) and my advice would be to spend the extra $$ now and get it done with all stainless steel. Had mine done many years ago and it's still like new!!!
If I hadn't gone with SS, I'd have replaced it at least 2 times since and paid more than the SS cost in the first place.

Thank you for the great inputs. the only obsticle I am not willilng to leave with is: every exhaust shop around my area are still crushing pipes to bend them vice the mandrel bend process. but going the extra mile for the SS I agree.

Get the full Magnaflow system with an "X" pipe, and toss the first section. You can have your shop bend up the front section and tweak the rest of it to fit. You won't be dissapointed with the sound!!!
If you're going with the stainless, call "Allen's" and see what a pre-bent 2 1/2 set of stainless will run. That's where I got mine and then had a shop do the install. The pipes weren't all crushed like you're talking about. A real quality system. Just google Allens exhaust pipes and all the contact info will be there including a phone number to call for a quote on what you want. Good luck!

If your LT-1 is pretty stock the aluminized Corvette Central N-11 "Off-Road" system sounds pretty decent but on a highly modified motor I would go with a custom set-up.
Here is a sound clip from my Wife's 70 LT-1, you need to advance the video to around 5 minutes to avoid all my remarks before start-up:
