Yes.. you can. Just run a 12 volt wire off say... The back of the alternator... and then run another wire from the case to ground and the tach should go to zero.... Make sure you push in slightly on the spindle in case it pulled outward before you set your needle.

ok, how the heck do I drop the steering column? I removed the under dash bolts near the front lower lip of the dash, the two bolts at the fire walla nd have removed the bolts that hold the two halves of the steering clumn together under the engine bay yet I am unable to get the cloumn low enough to get teh dash out! I have the tilt steering wheel/column.

thanks

How much more room do you need?
Is there any 'spring' to the column if a helper holds it down?

Hold on.. if you are 78-82 are your taking the entire housing out? you don't need to do this.... go to the page below and you'll see detailed instructions... but the housing can stay in the car.

http://willcoxcorvette.com/repairand...lp.php?hID=290

Remove the housing screws, then pull it out some.. remove the lens, then the gauge cover and then the three bolts that hold the tach...

I got her....forgot to unhook the speedo cable! I have a 75 so I was able to turn the panel sideways and get to the back screws to remove the tach...tachs in and working but I apparently bumped her after zeroing her as she now shows about 400rpms with her turned off...oh well, I am not taking the dash apart just to fix it. I will wait till something else breaks to take her apart again. My bcak cant handle the C3 back crawl and my tongue refuses to tuck into the back right corner of my mouth to get everything to line up correctly again! LOL

I'm with you on the back crawl.... a lift comes in handy for me when doing what I've posted below this. ..

With the key off.. it will store part of the old setting.. what does it read with the key on and the car not running? I hope Zero..

On your car.. I hate to say this.. but there is an easier way...

Dang it, that was the instructions I couldnt find earlier!! I had everythign but the Clips in the engine bay removed. Not sure what she reads with key on but engine off... I think I bumped her after zero setting her and she reads about 300rpm. I will check tomorrow. I store the car at the In laws as my garage is full. LOL

I bumped her, she sits at 300rpms with power but no start. Using my timing light I verified that she is reading about 300 rpms higher then the light. Oh well, I will fix her when I have another reason to pull the dash.
