I am looking to put the A/C back in my Vette, but do not have most of the under hood parts... I have heard that the A/C systems that GM used in 77 and surrounding years was garbage...
Is there a better quality A/C system that I could use in my Vette (i.e. out of a camaro or buick or something) that would be better quality and would work with the Vette?
If you're missing most of the parts, you'll probably find it's cheaper to replace the whole system with a Vintage Air or Hot Rod Air system. I was in the same boat with my 72 and found it cheaper to buy the complete VA kit than to replace stock components. In addition to cost benefit, you get a much improved system.
I would not suggest Hot Rod Air.... thats all I'll say on that matter.
But if you use the 77 system it is quite capable of cooling the car just fine! If you are going with 134 make sure to purchase a cross flow condenser which will accommodate the use of 134a.
You might take other steps to make sure the car not taking on extra heat which would include a good heat barrier on the floor board, make sure the tunnel insulator is in place and possibly use the foam collar on the back of the transmission. There is info on the console heat here: http://willcoxcorvette.com/repairand...lp.php?hID=163
Take out trans.I bought one but Im not putting in unless I have to remove the trans for some other reason.I found just stuffing the foam collar above the bell housing knocked out 75% of the heat.
If you don't want to remove the tranny and shifter, you can cut it in the middle and use the foil tape to repair the cut when installed. Food for thought.
